A contingent of 21 Orang Asli youth left for Sabah today to attend the Indigenous Youth Leadership Camp organized by Belia JOAS, the youth wing of the Indigenous Peoples Network of Malaysia.
Comprising a combination of experienced youth leaders and first-time participants, the group represented the Mah Meri, Semai, Temiar, Temuan, Jahut and Jakun communities.
The annual camp, held from 24 to 26 October 2014 in the Lomunu Club House, Penampang will feature modules on indigenous rights, a musical camp, and sessions with indigenous mentors. Altogether about 70 Orang Asal youths from Semenanjung, Sabah and Sarawak are expected to attend the camp.
The programme also includes the bi-annual general meeting of Belia JOAS, and the election of a new committee to serve for the next two years.

The Semai from Ulu Tual squeeze in the back of the Ranger with Yein, JOAS programme coordinator.
Yein gives Filla a crash course in point-and -shoot photography.
And also to Alak from Pos Sau, Kelantan.
Check-in was smooth with about 70kg of JOAS books also checked in.
The Mah Meri girls (at left) were the last to arrive (due to the Mah Meri driver being lost, not on the road, but in KLIA2!)
Getting together for a final pre-departure briefing.
Yein sorting out immediate logistical concerns and giving a recap on the programme in Sabah.
Also, on how to read the boarding pass. Half the group is travelling by air for the first time.
Mia has been designated as the contingent leader and the go-to person for any problems.
The anxiety shows on the first-timers ….
But it is one-for-all, all-for-one …
The group photo as requested by JOAS Media.
This one with the parents and drivers who came to send off the youths.
We couldn’t resist another group photo, this time at the departure gate.
And then they were off to a rainy Sabah.
