The fitness community has once again come together to sweat it out for a good cause. A group of very fit-looking gym-goers got their friends to sponsor them to do burpees and carry weights at the Pushmore Fitness Centre in Tropicana Selatan, PJ yesterday (Saturday, 16 May 2015).
The event was organized to raise funds for the Nepal Earthquake Relief Fund set up by JOAS, the Indigenous Peoples Network of Malaysia, with COAC as the managing organisation.
All donations made to this fund will be chanelled to the Kathmandu-based Indigenous Peoples Campaign for the Earthquake Victims.
This is a coalition of 7 indigenous peoples organisations in Nepal that are linked to the Chiangmai-based Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact (AIPP). The members have been active on the ground providing relief work and aid.
From sponsorships of a minimum of RM1.00 per burpee and RM1.00 per kilogram of weights lifted, the 35 participants raised a total of a little more than RM5,000.00 in cash and another RM17,000.00 in pledges. So, when all the pledges are in, we can expect a grand total collection from this gym event to be about RM22,000.00 (or about USD6,000.00).
This amount includes donations from the other vendors at the event who donated a part, if not all, of the proceeds of their sales that morning to the fund.
Thanks to Sze Ning who coordinated the event, and to Yein, Mia, Nikke and Lily who helped out.

Participants registering for the campaign and recording their pledges.
A total of 35 gym-goers participated in the event.
Their friends pledged a certain amount for each kilogramme of dry weight lifted. In all, a total of 1,957 kgs were lifted that morning.
Their friends also pledged a certain amount for each burpee completed — a burpee being a series of exercises performed in rapid succession.
Sequence of a burpee: begin in a standing position; drop into a squat position with your hands on the ground; kick your feet back, while keeping your arms extended; immediately return your feet to the squat position; and jump up from the squat position.
That morning a total of 1,801 burpees were completed by the participants.
A group from a gym in Penang came all the way down to participate in this event.
Three vendors of healthy food and gym accessories also put up shop and donated all or a part of their their collections.
The whole event was just for a few hours, from 10am to 1pm.
