The expert report on the “History, Presence and Situation of the Temiar-Orang Asli in the Pos Belatim Customary Territory” by Colin was finalized last week and filed in the Kota Baru High Court on Sunday. The re-trial of the judicial review application by the Temiars of Pos Belatim, Gua Musang against the Kelantan State Government and the Ladang Rakyat Corporation comes up for re-hearing, as ordered by the Court of Appeal, on Thursday 16 April.
Penghulu Angah and his grandson came down to the office of Lim Heng Seng, the lead lawyer, on Monday, 7th April and provided plugs for the gaps in the report, including his 8-generation genealogy along the paternal line. Assisting Heng Seng in the preparation of his legal submission is Ms. Tan Hooi Ping and Dr. Yogeswaran. Yoges will argue the case on Thursday.
A two-day international conference on “Access to Justice for Indigenous Peoples” was held at Universiti Malaya on 9-10 April 2015. It was jointly organized by the Center for Malaysian Indigenous Studies and the Law Faculty. International speakers from Italy, Australia, the UK, the US, Indonesia and Singapore as well as local researchers, lawyers, conservationists and NGO activists attended and presented papers on a variety of subjects. Colin spoke on “Illuminating Impressions: The use of photos and photography in Orang Asli land claims cases.”
The Left Coalition led by Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) organized a two-day symposium on the “11th Malaysia Plan: Aspirations of the Marginalized Rakyat” at the Malaysiakini office in PJ on 11-12 April 2015. Together on the panel where Orang Asli issues were discussed were speakers on the urban poor, single mothers and the disabled sectors. The event was broadcast live via video feed by Malaysiakini TV.
